Movie director, born in Tokyo, Japan. His first movie (Sanshiro Sugata) came out in 1943. He was famous for his adaptation of the No theatre to cinema, in movies as Rashomon (1950), awarded at the Venice Film Festival, and Shichinin No Samurai. He also directed literary adaptations, such as Kumonosu-Jo and Donzoko. His other famous movies are Kagemusha, Palme d'Or at the Cannes Festival, Ran, Dreams, and Madadayo.
