Actor and film-maker, born in Richmond, Virginia, USA, the younger brother of actress Shirley MacLaine. He made his film debut in Splendor in the Grass (1961). At the same time as acting, he produced Bonnie and Clyde (1967), co-wrote Shampoo (1975), and co-directed Heaven Can Wait (1978). He was the producer, co-writer and star of Reds (1981), which won him an Oscar as Best Director. Later films include Dick Tracy (1990), Bugsy (1991), Love Affair (1994), Bulworth (1998), and Town and Country (2001).
